It has been rather hectic around here, what with school letting out for the summer and the kids being home. My two teenagers just got back from camp yesterday and now the summer schedule really begins! Our little family is really looking forward to our summer vacation... I hope you find the quick tip useful. Shortly after I was diagnosed with diabetes last February, my eyesight began to get blurry, one of the symptoms of the disease. I kept wearing stronger and stronger reading glasses, and using the old computer became quite a challenge. The quick tip will tell you how I coped with the situation until my vision returned to near normal! The featured article comes as a response to queries from several of my readers concerning transferring Outlook Express files to a new computer. The article contains several "extra" steps to help preserve your data. You sure don't want to lose anything valuable! Print it out for future reference! ================================================================= 1. Article: Transferring your Outlook Express Messages and Addressbook If you need to transfer your Outlook Express to a different computer the task will require more than just saving them to a disk and copying them to the new computer. Just copying them will not work because they need to be processed by Outlook Express before they can be used. Here is how I've done it before, but a word of caution here. Don't delete anything until you are sure it has been successful! I have included what seems to be extra steps, but they are designed to make the process easier to keep track of your files. 1. Create a folder in the root directory of each computer (I am assuming these are not networked computers, else you would not need this step). I always name my transferring folder "Atransfer" to keep them at the top of the directory and easy to spot. The root directory is C:\ not C:\Windows. 2. Find the storage folder for your emails on the old computer. To do this, go into Outlook Express and click on "Tools" then "Options..." to get the Options dialog box. 3. At the Options dialog box, click on the "maintenance" tab. Click on the button that says "store folder". This will give you the location of the folder where your messages are stored. Write down or copy that location. 4. After noting the location, close Outlook Express. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to that folder. Usually it will be in C\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{some number here}\Microsoft\Outlook Express 5. At that folder, highlight all the dbx files and COPY (don't move) them into the folder you created on that computer(in my example Atransfer). 6. Transfer the contents of that folder to the similar transfer folder on the other computer by floppy disk, zip disk, or whatever means you have. You are now done on the old computer for now. 7. On the new computer, open up Outlook Express. From the menu bar, choose "File" then "Import" then "messages..." You will get the import wizard dialog box. 8. Choose Outlook Express 5 for the email program to import from. 9. The next box will ask you for the location of the files. Click the radio button that says "import mail from an OE5 store directory", then click "OK". 10. You will get another location box. Click the "Browse" button and then navigate to the Atransfer folder (that's why I named it that, it will be near the top and easy to find). 11. After selecting your folder, click next. You will get another box which allows you to select all or some of the mail folders for export. Choose whichever is your requirement. Then click "Next". 12. When you have clicked "Next" just sit back and watch her run! Outlook will now import all the messages into the new program. 13. When you get the import complete message, just click "finish" and you should be able to read your imported messages! ____________________ If you need to transfer your addressbook, also, here is the easiest way to accomplish that task. 1. Open your addressbook and click "File" then "Export" then "Addressbook (WAB)". Choose a location as before or save directly to your floppy if it will fit. (By the way, this is a good way to save a backup copy of your addressbook. You will be able to import it in case of your addressbook file becomes corrupted or accidentally deleted. Export it to a safe place regularly!) 2. Transfer the file to the new computer. You can leave it on the disk if you desire, just import from the disk. Open Outlook Express and then from OE's main window choose "File", then Import, then addressbook or from the Addressbook, choose "File" then "Import", "Addressbook(WAB). Find the WAB file and click "OK". Your old addressbook will be imported to your new addressbook. Today's Quick Tip: Changing the Text Size on Your Browser As I said earlier, one of the symptoms of my diabetes was a temporary blurring of my vision. This made surfing the Net quite difficult, even with 3X reading glasses! Well, did you know that in Internet Explorer you can change the size of the text on a web page? In version 5.5 just click on View...Text size. You will be given several options from "largest" to "smallest" with several choices in between. Just adjust the text to the size that most comfortable for you! (Oh, by the way, you don't have to have diabetes to use this...as I get, shall I say, more mature I find that my screen seems to get smaller and harder to read). :>} Note, however, that it will not change the size of graphical elements on the page, including text that is turned into a graphic image. And if an image is "sliced" into smaller images for faster loading, the image will "come apart at the seams". Hope you enjoy this tip...give it a try!
